What is an engine ECU?

The engine control unit (ECU) is an electronic module that manages the operation of the powertrain. It acts as the 'brain' of the engine – responsible for collecting data from sensors, interpreting it, and continuously controlling key processes such as fuel injection, ignition, and emission control systems. Modern ECUs appeared in vehicles at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, and their development was accelerated by increasingly stringent emission standards. Today, they are an essential component of every bus – whether it's a city bus, tourist coach, or minbus.

What is the ECU responsible for?

• Fuel injection management – precise fuel dosing depending on engine load and driving conditions.

Symptoms of a damaged ECU in a bus

• Excessive exhaust smoke – may indicate incorrect air-fuel mixture control.
• Errors during computer diagnostics – presence of communication errors with the ECU or sensor-related errors that persist despite replacement.
